They stepped through a small stone archway out into the daylight. Kai blinked as her eyes readjusted to the sunlight.

“Naaji showed me that secret passage. Let’s hurry back to my house and make a new plan,” said Amenken.

The swarms of tiny gnats filled the air like black smoke that wouldn’t drift away in the wind. As Kai followed Amenken down the side steps of the temple, she saw a large crowd of people standing in the street, covered in bugs. Their arms flailed in every direction trying to rid their bodies of the gnats.

There was no way to avoid the crowd. “Come on, Kai. These people will actually help shield us from the soldiers. When they realize we’re not in the back of the temple, they’ll run out here and see this mob of people.” He led Kai through the middle of the great crowd.

Halfway through the bug-infested mob, a hand shot out and grabbed Kai by the arm.

“She’s evil! She’s the reason for the plagues! Take her to Pharaoh!”

“Amenken, help!” Kai tried pulling the stranger’s hand off her arm, but she wasn’t strong enough.

Another voice from the crowd rose above the others. “I saw her before. These bad things started happening as soon as she got here!”

“Amenken!” Kai got pulled deeper into the crowd and lost sight of her friend. “Amenken!”

Through the confusion of the yelling and the people crowding around her, Kai saw the guards come up and move the people out of the way. “Let go of the girl!”

Kai felt the hand that was holding her release its grip. She spun around looking for Amenken. She saw him standing just past the crowd, but she couldn’t move.

The gnats swirled around the crowd, but they stayed off of Kai.

The soldiers made their way to her.

She held the book behind her back.

The first soldier to reach her looked at Kai and shook his head. He also had to fight off the gnats in order to keep eye contact with Kai. “Amazing that the bugs don’t affect this one. Take her to Horus. Immediately!”
